Proposed Gipsy & Traveller Sites

South Norfolk Council are hell bent on putting gipsy & traveller sites in Suton or Spooner Row. They haven't listened to any of the concerns put forward. Both proposed sites are very close to the A11 trunk road which has the worse quality surface possible resulting in a very very noisy location (they were going to re-surface it with better quality material but didn't). Who would want to live there? Even the locals living some distance away get fed up with the noise. Surely there is some health and safety legislation that covers this? Those proposing the sites don't care as they won't have to live there!!

For residents who have a proposed gipsy and traveller site (Spooner Row, Suton and Wymondham - Stanfield Oil Depot) there is an 8 week consultation period which starts on Monday 9 March 2009 at 9am and finishes on Tuesday 5 May 2009 at 4.30pm. This is organised by South Norfolk Council (lets hope they inform people properly this time). You will need to write your letters to South Norfolk Council's Planning Office. For Spooner Row and Suton, you will have to submit your letters again as the first ones didn't count!

Have SNC spent all our hard-earned money on this farce of a document. Basically they have picked the same sites and thrown in one that will be rejected for good measure. Do these people think that we, who pay their wages are stupid. It is about time the community stands up for their rights. Does anyone know if the community are allowed to have a vote of no confidence in the district council members or the party who employ them? I suppose many of us must first of all make a complaint and ask the Ombudsman to investigate. I know this is a so-called directive from central government that these sites have to be found, but SNC are not carrying this out in a sound and fair way. We need someone out there who is knowledgeable about these matters to advise us as to what the best way to approach this. We cannot sit back and let the council treat the local community as though they are 2nd class citizens and just ignore them. A lot of the objections are actually out of concern for the suitability of the sites for the travelling community. We all know that these sites have to be built, but I am sure they wouldn't stick a new housing estate in the middle of green belt where there are no facilities. There will be no amenities for the travellers and most of us know what it is like to live in a rural community with no transport etc within walking distance. We end up being taxi service to the children, that is why most of us choose to live close to amenities when the children are younger and then village life is something to look forward to when we can sit back and relax. Put these sites where the occupants can enjoy the local amenities. The proposed sites provide NONE!

I think the District Council should be ashamed of itself making a 72 year old pensioner stand outside all day and evening with her petition. It was a public consultation day at Spooner Row village hall about proposed gypsy sites and they wouldn't even let her in the lobby area. In the local papers recently, the Council said that they take petitions seriously when referring to Kirby Cane's petition for proposed gypsy sites, so what are they afraid of here. Good for her for calmly persevering despite it being bitterly cold in the evening.

What is the rush?! The Gypsy and Travellers Proposals are part of the Greater Norwich Development Partnership's (GNDP) plans (for the whole area) and as part of these plans the proposed gypsy sites should be adopted with it. The adoption date is late 2010. Yet South Norfolk Council are trying to rush through their plans on gypsy sites with a piecemeal approach before the Greater plan for the area is properly formulated. Just because there is money available from the Government for gypsy sites, is not a justified reason for doing this in a haphazard manner.

It would be more economical and socially cohesive for gypsy housing to be incorporated into new housing developments. I read somewhere that a new social house costs about £60K to build, yet the gypsy pitches at Harford Bridges (according to the council) work out at £200K each (over 3 times as much!). Just because Government money is available (which is our taxes!) doesn't mean we should not get value for money. The council should work in our interest and wait for the GNDP's policy to be formulated and implemented.
